Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the speech duration estimate?

The calculator gives a mathematical estimate based on your word count and chosen speaking speed in words per minute (WPM). Real speech varies due to pauses, emphasis, audience interaction, and pace changes. For important speeches, treat the result as a starting point and time yourself reading aloud for the most accurate measurement.

What speaking speed should I choose?

Slow (100 WPM) is deliberate and formal, suitable for eulogies or very technical content. Conversational (130 WPM) works for interviews and casual presentations. Average (150 WPM) suits most professional presentations. Fast (180 WPM) is energetic — TED Talks average around 163 WPM. Very Fast (200 WPM) is closer to auctioneer pace. When in doubt, use 150 WPM as the default.

How many words do I need for a 5-minute speech?

At the average speaking speed of 150 WPM, a 5-minute speech requires approximately 750 words. At a slow 100 WPM pace, you need about 500 words. At a faster 180 WPM, you need about 900 words. The timing guide panel shows exact targets for common speech lengths at your selected speaking speed.

Can I use this for presentations and TED Talks?

Yes. TED Talks have a strict 18-minute limit, which at their average of 163 WPM is approximately 2,934 words. Standard conference presentations (15–20 minutes) typically need 2,250–3,000 words. Academic presentations (10 minutes) need roughly 1,500 words. Use the "Enter word count" mode if you know your target without having written the full text yet.

How is silent reading speed different from speaking speed?

The average person reads silently at about 238 WPM — significantly faster than speaking aloud. Reading your script silently will make it feel shorter than it actually sounds when delivered. Always time yourself reading aloud, not silently, when preparing a speech. The tool shows both silent reading and speaking duration for comparison.
