Do cover letters still matter?
Many job seekers question whether cover letters are worth writing in 2026. The answer: it depends on the situation, but a strong cover letter can meaningfully differentiate you.
When cover letters matter most:
- Small and mid-size companies where hiring managers read applications personally
- Roles where writing ability is directly relevant (marketing, communications, content)
- Cases where your resume has an obvious gap or unusual career path to explain
- Competitive roles where many candidates have similar qualifications
When they matter less:
- Large companies using ATS that filter before human review
- Roles where the application explicitly says "cover letter optional"
- High-volume entry-level positions
Even when optional, a good cover letter costs you 5 minutes with an AI tool and can only help.
The anatomy of a strong cover letter
Opening paragraph — hook + genuine interest
The opening needs to do three things: grab attention, name the specific role, and show why you want THIS company specifically (not just any job).
Weak opening: "I am writing to apply for the Software Engineer position I found on LinkedIn."
Strong opening: "Three years ago, I used Notion to rebuild how my 40-person team tracked projects — and it changed how I think about collaborative software. When I saw the Senior Engineer role on your infrastructure team, I wanted to write to you directly."
The difference: the strong opening shows genuine engagement with the company's product and creates a specific, memorable connection.
Middle paragraph(s) — evidence, not summary
Your resume already lists your experience. The cover letter should interpret it — explain the significance, tell the story behind the bullet point, and connect it directly to what the job requires.
Instead of: "I have 5 years of experience in customer success."
Try: "After building Acme's customer success function from 3 to 18 people, I learned that retention problems are almost always diagnosed too late. At your scale — 2,000 enterprise customers — the early warning systems you mentioned in your job posting are exactly the kind of infrastructure I want to build next."
The key is specificity. Specific numbers, specific company details, specific connection to the role.
Closing — clear call to action
Don't end with vague phrases like "I look forward to hearing from you." End with a specific, confident ask.
"I'd welcome 20 minutes to show you the retention dashboard we built and discuss how it might apply to your scale. I'm available Tuesday through Thursday this week."
Tailoring to each job vs using a template
The most common cover letter mistake is using the same letter for every application with the company name swapped. Hiring managers recognize this immediately.
Effective tailoring takes about 10 minutes per application:
- Read the job description and identify 2-3 specific requirements
- Find an experience or achievement that directly addresses each
- Look up one specific thing about the company (recent news, product feature, company value)
- Weave these specifics into the template
The AI cover letter generator does this automatically when you paste the job description — it pulls specific requirements from the posting and matches them to your background.
Common cover letter mistakes
Restating your resume: The cover letter should add new information, not summarize what's already on your resume.
Generic company research: "I admire your company's commitment to innovation" could apply to any company. Do actual research.
Focusing on what you want: "I am looking for a challenging role that will help me grow." The employer cares about what you will do for them, not what the job will do for you.
Being too long: One page maximum. Three to four paragraphs. Hiring managers spend 30-60 seconds on a cover letter.
Typos and errors: Read it aloud. Run it through a grammar checker. Errors signal carelessness.
