Why PDF pages come out rotated
PDF orientation issues are common when:
- Scanning physical documents on a flatbed scanner
- Combining PDFs with different orientations
- Converting from Word or other formats
- Receiving documents from different sources
Page rotation vs content rotation
- Page rotation changes the display orientation without altering content
- Content rotation physically rotates the content (different operation)
- PDF rotation is metadata — it tells PDF viewers at what angle to display the page
This means rotating a PDF is lossless. The quality is identical to the original.
Rotation modes explained
| Mode | Use case |
|---|---|
| All pages | Entire document scanned sideways |
| Individual pages | Only certain pages need rotation |
| Page range | Pages 3–7 are landscape in a portrait document |
| Odd/even pages | Two-sided scan with alternating orientation |
